Travelling to the Yorkshire Coast

With over 100 miles of dramatic coastline and with the North York Moors National Park on its doorstep, the Yorkshire Coast is one of the UK's premier holiday destinations and is easily accessible by rail, car, coach, bus or ferry.

Getting here by car

The Yorkshire Coast can be reached by road nationally from the A1 or M1, both run close to York in North Yorkshire.

There are good road links to the coast with the A64 providing easy access to the Borough of Scarborough from Leeds and York. Other key roads include the A171 Middlesbrough - Whitby - Scarborough road, the A165 Scarborough to Hull road (with access through the resorts of Filey, Bridlington and the surrounding coastal villages) and the A170 Scarborough to Thirsk road.

2-7 Day Council Car Parking Permits

Why not purchase your parking ticket in advance?

To ease the frustrating problem of parking you can purchase a parking ticket for the duration of your stay. Scarborough Borough Council Car Parking Tickets are available by telephone request from the Tourism Bureau or they are also available in person from our Tourist Information Centre in Whitby and the Scarborough Open Air Theatre Box Office (please check opening times) and from Customer First at Scarborough Town Hall. The 2 – 7 Day Tickets are valid in all Scarborough Borough Council Car Parks in Scarborough, Whitby, Filey, Robin Hood's Bay, Staithes and Sandsend. Please note if parking in a short stay car park time restrictions still apply.

Please note: Please allow up to 7 working days for processing and posting of car parking permits, when purchased over the phone.

The issue of a ticket does not guarantee a parking space.

Tickets are NOT refundable

The ticket must be visible in the windscreen.

Purchase Parking Tickets in Advance

Advance car parking tickets are also available for car parks across the borough. To ease the frustrating problem of parking you can purchase a parking ticket (min. stay of 2 days), valid in all Scarborough Borough Council owned short stay (Must not overstay the maximum hours stay indicated on the meter) and long stay car parks. Park & Ride

Whitby Park & Ride

The Whitby Park & Ride system is available seven days a week from the first day of North Yorkshire's Easter school holidays, until early November, including Bank Holidays. The car park is located at the A171/B1460 junction North of Whitby and has 450 free spaces. Buses run every 15 minutes and stop at West Cliff North Terrace, St. Hilda's Terrace and the Whitby Bus Station before returning to the park and ride site via the same stops.

Opening times:

March: 08:45 - 16:45

April: 08:15 - 17:40

May to September: 08:00 - 19:00

October to November: 08:15 - 17:40

Please note: The park and ride site, including the car park will be closed and locked 15 minutes after the last bus. There is no facility to reopen the site to recover vehicles left on the site after closure.

Scarborough Park & Ride

The Scarborough Park & Ride system is available seven days a week, throughout the summer until the end of October. The system includes two state-of-the-art car parks, with 600 free spaces each, including disabled bays, CCTV surveillance, enclosed waiting areas and toilets with baby changing facilities. The two park and ride sites are located at Seamer Road (Service A64) and Filey Road (Service A165). Buses run every 15 minutes and follow a circular route stopping at South Bay and York Place before returning to the respective park and ride site.

Please note: The park and ride site, including the car park will be closed and locked 15 minutes after the last bus. There is no facility to reopen the site to recover vehicles left on the site after closure.

Bridlington Park & Ride

The Bridlington Park & Ride system is available from the start of April through to October, from 7am until one hour before sunset. Transport links to the town start at 9am, with the last coach leaving the harbour top location at 6.15pm. The car park is located at South Cliff car park, overlooking Bridlington bay, with 1000 spaces including 50 disabled bays, on-site toilets (including disabled and special needs facilities). The bus picks up and drops off at the park and ride terminus and again directly opposite the harbour top/in front of South Cliff gardens. There are no intermediate pick up points.

Two cafés operate on a franchise and open according to seasonal demand, whilst there is also access to the beach, which in some cases is less than 50 metres from the park and ride.

As well as the park and ride service, there is also a land train called the 'Spalight Coastal Explorer' providing a link to the town centre.

Please note: The Land Train service will not be operating on South Promenade until further notice due to works being carried out by Yorkshire Water.
