Ravenscar

Details

Ravenscar is situated 7 miles/11 kilometres south-east of Whitby. There is an impressive panorama of the great sweep of Robin Hood's Bay on the approach road to Ravenscar. The country mansion of Raven Hall, built in 1774, became a hotel in 1895 as part of an ambitious plan to build a new town. The latter failed miserably but the hotel continues. The alum industry shaped the Ravenscar landscape and the fascinating story of the industry can be discovered at the archaeological remains. There is also a Coastal Centre run by the National Trust. You can find out more from the National Trust. The disused Scarborough to Whitby railway line passes through Ravenscar. The views from it are stunning, with panoramic vistas of the Heritage Coast. It's more or less flat and there's no traffic so it's an ideal route for walkers, horseriders and cyclists. It's 20 miles in total but, of course, you don't have to go the whole way. If you take a look at the old station platform, you will see the work of local sculptor Vivien Mousdell and the children of Ravenscar. The carved sleepers and tiles fronting the platform celebrate Ravenscar's association with the Scarborough to Whitby railway. Facilities in the village include public toilet, tourist information centre, cafe/tea shop, public house, post office, a church, a hotel and public telephone box.
