Limited edition prints by Scarborough artist Peter Watson go on display in the Gallery at the town’s Stephen Joseph Theatre next month.

A Wold View will feature around 40 prints of original paintings by Peter, whose graphic images show the local landscape in a new light.

Peter says: “A Wold View will feature landscapes of the Yorkshire Wolds, coast, and forestry looking at human interventions in organising the landscape, whether it be the effects modern farm machinery, historic structures or coastal erosion.”

Peter attended Hull College of Art and Liverpool College of Art in the 1960s followed by a career in teaching, first in Richmond and then in the Scarborough area. On a visit to Wentworth near Rotherham in the 1970s he was inspired by the industrial landscapes of the area and produced a series of paintings which led to a commission from the National Coal Board to paint 14 collieries in the South Yorkshire area; the pictures are now part of the collection at the National Coal Mining Museum for England at Wakefield.

More recently, Peter has found inspiration in the Yorkshire Wolds just south of Scarborough. His work has recently been exhibited at Bridlington Spa, The Yorkshire Wolds Gallery at Staxton, Scarborough Art Gallery, The Moors Centre at Danby, the Coast Gallery at Burniston and Gallery 49 at Bridlington.
A Wold View will also feature a few urban images, including one Peter painted in the 1970s depicting the steps down to the now closed underpass outside the Odeon cinema, now the SJT.

A Wold View can be seen in the Gallery at the SJT from 10am to 6pm, Mondays to Saturdays, except during show times. Entry is free.
