Ian Etton

Details

In 1970 Anthony Hutchinson spent a month in Staithes compiling a set of black and photographs for his final Photography degree show at Central London Polytechnic. The results, a stunning record of the life and characters of the village, recently came to light having been lost for over forty years. They have inspired artist Ian Burke to create a response in painting, drawing and print to the photographs and the precise moment in time and space that they have captured.

The paintings will be displayed alongside the photographs and other archive material from the period. The timeless quality of both the images and the village itself is emphasised by the context of 1970 and events unfolding around the world (Vietnam, Apollo 13, the Beatles split …); while in Staithes fishermen still brave dangerous seas for the daily catch, women boil crabs, beat carpets and scrub steps, boys sheltering from the wind share sneaky cigarettes behind the harbour wall and old men watch the skies for pigeons to return to their lofts.

The show will take place in a brand new exhibition space in the old Sunday School below the Wesleyan Chapel, Beckside, Staithes and opens on Saturday 14th September at 10am. The opening has been timed to coincide with the second Staithes Festival of Arts and Heritage.
