Details

Split into two parts this linear walk will cover the coastal route from Skirlington-Mappleton with transport provided. Participants are required to be of a good level of physical fitness as this will be a strenuous walk across some tough terrain.

Part 1 - Skirlington (Far Grange Holiday Park) to Hornsea beach walk Date: Monday, 10 April 2017

Time: 09.30-12.00 (approximate) Distance: 6 km (approximate) Meeting point: Eastgate Car Park, Hornsea

Parking: Eastgate Car Park (charges apply), Morrow Avenue (free, approx. 500m away)

Walk leader: Brian Bate, 01482 392518 / 07899 994830

Route description:

• Minibus from Eastgate Car Park, Hornsea, to Far Grange Park. Public toilets are available at Eastgate Car Park.
• Walk approx. 500m from drop off point near the holiday park reception to beach access (taking care with regard to traffic) and descend the beach access (taking care with regard to the gradient and any fenced off areas).
• Turn right and proceed south along the beach, continuing for approx. 5 km. An exit point from the beach exists at North Cliff Boating Club after approx. 3.5 km. Use wooden stairs to cross groyne.
• Leave the beach via access where Hornsea sea wall begins and walk approx. 500m along the promenade to Eastgate Car Park. Walk ends.

Notes:

• Although flat, this is a strenuous walk due to the terrain. Due to the very limited opportunities to leave the beach between Far Grange Holiday Park and Hornsea, this walk should only be undertaken by those with a good level of physical fitness.
• Walkers should take care to avoid debris left on the beach by coastal erosion (concrete, metal, etc.) and should avoid walking beneath the cliff face as this could be unstable. Any wiring protruding from the cliff face should not be approached as this could be live. Please see the accompanying risk assessment for a full breakdown of the risks. Live/spent ordnance has been known to be washed up along the beach near to the WWII defences. Walkers should therefore not touch/pick up any unidentified metal objects that may be unstable ordnance.
