Arts & Heritage on the Yorkshire Coast

Sitting on a bench looking onto the sea

Heritage is a given on the Yorkshire Coast.

Prehistory buffs will know it as the site of one the world’s most important Mesolithic archaeological sites; the Romans ranged signal stations along this stretch of the country, and the Vikings marauded here. In the Middle Ages, monasteries and castles were founded; in the 17th century, holidaymakers seeking health treatments began flocking here. The Victorians built railway lines to the Yorkshire coast, and travelled here in their thousands. And in the 1930s, Beautiful People sailed up and down the coast in search of the elusive tunny fish. All have left their mark, and now the entire coast is a mecca for those who love English history.

Those with an artistic bent have always been attracted to the sea, and this coastline has a long history of artistic communities that continues to this day.
