North York Moors - Art & Heritage
If the North York Moors National Park’s claim to historical fame was based just on the magnificent ruined abbeys at Rievaulx and Byland, it would still be an internationally important area for heritage. But there’s so much more than just those two spectacular venues. The entire National Park coastline (and slightly beyond), including the Cleveland Way National Trail, is designated as the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast, and with good cause: in England and Wales, only the most beautiful and unspoilt stretches of coast have been given this special status, ensuring they are cared for by local authorities and government agencies.
You’ll find grand castles and great houses, abandoned mining sites and monasteries and amazing museums, including the unique Ryedale Folk Museum in Hutton le Hole, where you can see historical houses just as they were in their own times, from the Iron Age to the 1950s.
