Brompton - Out & About
Brompton village is situated about eight miles
from Scarborough, on the A170 Scarborough to Pickering road. This
village is said to have once been a residence of the Northumbrian
Kings. The foundations of an ancient building are still visible
nearby on Castle Hill.
The village has one of the most beautiful, elegant, and spacious
village churches in Yorkshire.
The patron of the church is the late Sir George Cayley. Born in
Yorkshire in 1773, Cayley is the man described by aviation experts
as the father of aeronautics. It was in Brompton Village in 1853,
that Sir George's successfully tested the first manned flight in a
fixed-wing aircraft.
For those that like to explore, Brompton is just minutes from
the beautiful surroundings of the North York Moors National Park.
