Grosmont - Out & About

Grosmont VillageGrosmont is located within the Esk Valley about 5 miles from Whitby, off the A169. Grosmont was originally named Grandimont, taking its name from a small priory founded about 1200 which once stood by the north bank of the Esk. The prehistoric High and Low Bride Stones still stand on the moor, about a mile away, hinting at even earlier occupation.

Looking at Grosmont today, it is hard to believe it was once the site of a thriving ironstone industry, evidence of which can still be seen in the heavily wooded National Park car park.

Many visitors today are attracted to this village as it is the northern terminus of the renowned North Yorkshire Moors Railway. This steam train service runs 18 miles through moorland and valleys from Pickering to Grosmont.

There is a regular bus service through this village, bus number 99.
