Scarborough - Arts and Heritage

dark room filled with posters

Scarborough has a particularly busy arts community, with numerous little galleries tucked away down side streets, and bigger galleries in the town’s ‘cultural quarter’, which centres on the historical Crescent, just off the main town centre. It boasts a world-class museum – the Rotunda, one of whose founders was William Smith, known as ‘the father of English geology’ – and an internationally regarded theatre, the Stephen Joseph.

It also has a rich and remarkable history, including one of the UK’s most important Mesolithic sites at Star Carr and a pre-eminent place in the development of the seaside resort. Oh, there’s a rather fine English Heritage Castle up on the hill, too…
