Scarborough Seafest 2013Last year, self confessed foodies and budding cooks were able to enjoy two days of free seafood cookery demonstrations in the Seafest Food Theatre, by leading Yorkshire chefs. Demonstrations started at 10.30am everyday, through to 3.30pm in the afternoon. On the Saturday at 3.30pm Rob Green from Green’s Restaurant, Whitby and Stephanie Moon, Chef Consultant at Rudding Park, Harrogate, went head to head to create the best dish of the day.

Thirsty visitors were also able to anchor down at the Great Yorkshire Brewery, which hosted a real ale and beer festival with over 40 real ales, beers and ciders brewed and sourced locally. This was complemented by a full line up of free music throughout the weekend put together by the organisers of Scarborough’s popular annual music event, Acoustic Gathering.

Scarborough Seafest 2013Visitors were also able to work their way through a sea of mouth watering food stalls at the mini food festival, enjoy original paintings and drawings of naval, maritime and local east coast landscapes by local artists and purchase special gifts from the various craft stalls. There were also demonstrations by Sainsburys Home Economist, locally born Helen Broadhurst and Chef Zoe McClean, showcasing a variety of dishes including fish paella.

A highlight of the weekend was the spectacular fireworks display on South Bay at 10.30pm on Saturday 20 July.

A wave of children’s activities also took place throughout the festival. Scarborough Sea Life Sanctuary bought its mobile rock pool to give youngsters a chance to get up close to crabs and starfish.  Children also had the chance to be part of the Orpheus the Mariner community project, run by the Animated Objects Theatre Company in conjunction with Coastival.  In February 2014, a two day performance featuring giant puppets and over 700 local people will take place.  It will culminate with the appearance of a gigantic puppet called ‘Hades’, which will be a record attempt for the largest puppet in the world.  Over the Seafest weekend, the construction of Hades will begin and everyone that takes part will get to add their initials to the structure, so when it’s standing 26 metres tall, they know they will have played a part in the record attempt.

Scarborough Museums Trust also exhibited tasters of its new exhibition ‘Last Stop Scarborough’, which ran until 5 January 2014 at Scarborough Art Gallery, and the Rotunda Museum’s current exhibition, ‘Scarborough’s Lost Dinosaurs’.
