Bringing bikes by Train

The Scarborough Borough is well served by rail, trains operated by TransPennine Express call at Scarborough station. This service is able to carry bikes.

If you are bringing your bike by train to Scarborough, please read the information below for services within the UK.

Please ensure that you have bike space reservations for your outward and return journeys where applicable. Reservations (free) are required on East Coast, Cross Country and Grand Central services, which can generally carry 3 - 5 bikes each. Also fast Transpennine services each have two reservable bike spaces.

Cycle space can be reserved in advance, through East Coast's’s cycling web page when buying tickets.

East Coast Bicycle Information

For Grand Central trains, tel 0870 333 4910 for assistance.

Bike space and seat reservations can be made in person at principal stations up to 2-3 months before departure date.

Local services are operated by Northern Trains, and generally carry a maximum of two bikes per train subject to space being available on a first come, first served basis.

On most Cross Country and Grand Central services to York, bikes are stowed on vertical hangers in a lobby area in each train. A cycle symbol is normally displayed by the nearest exterior door. Heavy touring luggage must please be removed so quick release panniers etc will help enormously.

Please help the train operators when departing from Scarborough, by advising platform staff of your intended service, and seek their advice as to where to position yourself plus bike for efficient boarding.
