Whitby - Tv, Film & Literature

Family walking by staring at old fashion police car

Whitby has a unique literary heritage – the man known as one of, if not the, earliest English poet, Caedmon, was a lay brother at Whitby Abbey (then known as Streonæshalch) in the late 7th century.Much later, in 1890, Irish writer Bram Stoker stayed in the town for a while, and was much struck by its Gothic splendour – he ended up setting key scenes of his classic novel Dracula here.

And more recently, Hollywood superstar Gwyneth Paltrow visited to film AS Byatt’s epic novel Possession, and Michel (The Crimson Petal and the White) Faber’s novel The Hundred and Ninety-Nine Steps is located here – the title refers to the famous steps leading from Henrietta Street up to the Abbey.

Close by, Goathland railway station doubled as Hogsmeade, one of the Hogwarts Express stops in the Harry Potter movies. The same village is known to millions of TV viewers as Aidensfield, home of the long-running TV series, Heartbeat.
