Details

The Stables
The stables have been in constant use since 1780 when they were first built and have been part of the famous racing tradition at Sledmere.
Thousands of thoroughbred horses have been bred at Sledmere over the last 200 years, among the most famous are Spearmint, Mumtaz Muhal, Straitlace, Scottish Union and Lily Agnes. Sledmere has been described historically as the most important stud in Yorkshire.
The ground floor of the historic stable block is open for visitors to explore. There are displays on the stud, racing, Sledmere House, the foaling box, tack rooms as well as a family activity room and of course the horses.
The stables are working stables and have some of the types of horses that would have been used on Sledmere Estate in the past including a shire horse and two small family ponies.

Hampton Paddock
Hampton Paddock is home to a range of farm animals including a small flock of Leicester Longwool sheep, a breeding pair of Norfolk Black turkeys and a range of different breeds of chicken which provide Sledmere House with a constant supply of eggs.
Penelope is our resident Gloucester Old Spot pig who provides us with piglets throughout the year; at times, some cows and calves come down to visit us from the Estate Farm and come spring, you will be able to see some Leicester Longwool lambs.
Come along and enjoy a picnic in Hampton Paddock and say hello to our resident animals.
