Although the Mill has probably occupied this excellent position since the 13th Century Tocketts has evolved progressively over the intervening years reaching it's final height and form in about 1850. With the installation of a newfangled pitch-back waterwheel along with a cast iron gearing and associated shafts to carry its power to all four floors the Mill became an important asset for the Zetland Estates during a time when the local population was expanding owing to the discovery of Cleveland Ironstone.

Visitors will be able to watch as the weight of water splashing onto the 18 ft. diameter waterwheel makes it turn about 8 times every minute and see how the large cast iron gearing conducts this power to a variety of Mill machinery via a series of shafts and belt driven pulleys. A fine silk screen grain elevator and dresser fan are amongst the machinery providing constant motion.

Children are invited under supervision to engage the sack hoist to demonstrate this ingenious device ands feel the power of the water-driven system. There are also models and exhibits along with replica querns - which children can use to make their own "flour". The Mill also houses a fine collection of wooden patterns from Hauxwells of Yarm an important local firm of Millwrights who in the past serviced many of the regions Mills. Enthusiastic Guides are always on hand.

The Mill building forms part of a secluded caravan park nestling in a wooded valley. The caravan site provides bar and restaurant facilities which are open to the general public. Tocketts is set on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors close to the historic market town of Guisborough where further facilities are available along with the ruins of an Augustinian Priory founded in 1119 by Robert Bruce Lord of Allendale (an ancestor of the Scottish King of that name). About 4 miles away is the seaside resort of Saltburn which retains much of its Victoria charm.

Come along and enjoy an amazing and informative tour around the Mill ~ flat shoes recommended as the original stairs to each floor are quite steep!
