Details
RV Roger is one of the premier independent nurseries in the UK, managed by the third generation of the founder Royston Valentine Roger, having been established over 100 years ago, and winning awards at Royal Horticultural Society events annually since that time. We grow a wide range of traditional hardy nursery stock on a 200 acre site in the Vale of Pickering, North Yorkshire, specialising in growing fruit trees, roses, ornamental trees, shrubs, bulbs, hedging and herbaceous plants. Stock is supplied as bare-root plants from the nursery throughout the winter months (November to March), and as potted plants from the Plant Centre all year round. We grow and sell some of the more unusual and difficult to find plant varieties, being one of the few nurseries in the UK which can supply such diverse things as multi-tier espalier fruit trees; 50,000 roses; a huge collection of bulbs of all four seasons; and 90 varieties of seed potato.
RV Roger is the holder of the National collection of Erythronium (Dog’s Tooth Violet), and we pride ourselves on being able to source stock widely throughout the UK and Europe for any plants that we do not grow ourselves. We can also supply rootstocks and scion material for anyone keen to try their hand at a little grafting as well. We produce seasonal catalogues throughout the year in both printed and PDF form which are available upon request. Our retail website is www.rvroger.co.uk, and the email address for all inquiries is sales@rvroger.co.uk, and we welcome telephone calls on 01751 472226.
Stock
We stock and supply the following from either the plant centre (available year round as potted stock), or from the nursery (available as bare-root or rootballed between November and March): Trees, Shrubs, Conifers, Hedging, Roses, Perennials, Herbaceous, Bulbs of all four seasons, rare South African (and other) bulbs, Kings, Franchi, and Moles seeds, tree requisites, award-winning composts, planters, pots, and more! We grow as much as we can in the nursery (trees, Hedging, shrubs, herbaceous etc) except where specific soil requirements means we are unable to grow certain plants (such as for Acid-loving plants), when we will buy in from specialist nurseries who do have the appropriate conditions. However, we will not import from any region of the world where there are significant known plant pests or pathogens. A recent example of this is with the Xylella outbreak in Mediterranean regions, in which RV Roger was at the forefront of horticultural businesses in declaring a moratorium on imports from these regions, in order to protect plant stocks and plant health in the UK.
Opening hours
The RV Roger plant centre and office is open 7 days a week throughout the year (from 9am to 5pm weekdays, and 10am to 4pm Sundays), with the bulb houses and display beds stocked to show off some of our seasonal favourites. We host a number of annual events including the nationally attended Ryedale Rose Festival in July, which attracts the very best breeders and growers from around the UK, and the ever popular Apple Weekend in October, where you can bring fruit for identification.
Plant health
As well as retailing through our plant centre, we also supply wholesale to the trade from our nursery, and we have a website (www.rvroger.co.uk) where most of our stock can be viewed, and orders placed online. We are plant health certified through the government agency Defra/APHA, and can therefore arrange deliveries throughout the UK, Europe, and the rest of the world. We undergo a regular program of phytosanitary inspections of nursery fields and plant stocks, by officers of the government's Plant Health and Seeds Inspectorate (PHSI), in order to ensure the retention of our plant passport: UK/EW12819 ZP/a4.1/a16/b2/c.01/c.02/c2 'CAC Material', and we don’t import from any area of the world where plant health is known to be an issue (for example, with the Xylella problems in Italy and southern France).
RV Roger is staffed with knowledgeable and passionate horticulturists – and we try always to ensure that what we provide is top quality, suitable, and appropriate to our your needs. If you have any queries or questions about your plants, or what we can provide, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.
