Tastefully pine-furnished two-storey Cottage, the ground floor offers open plan and spacious Sitting Room and a wood-burning stove set in a stone fireplace. The fitted Kitchen is separated from the Dining Area by a peninsula unit with cupboards under.
Also downstairs is a Twin Bedroom with fitted furniture and adjacent very spacious, fully-tiled Wet Room with Bath, thermostatically controlled Electric Shower, Toilet, Basin with shaver socket alongside, Heated Towel-Rail, and ceiling Extractor Fan.
Because the existing ground floor area is open plan, it has been possible to adapt this cottage to the point where it is entirely suitable for an accompanied Guest with mobility impairment requiring full-time use of a wheelchair. Accessible via the downstairs Dining Area, the Wet Room incorporates appropriate support rails, thermostatically controlled mixer taps on the Basin, etc. In addition, we can make available an aluminium/plastic wheeled shower chair - not self-propelled - but please note that this has a maximum weight limit of 16 stone. Both the Wet Room and the adjacent Twin Bedroom have 1.5 metre turning areas for a wheelchair.
On the First Floor, which has partial headroom due to the original low beams in the eaves, are two cosy bedrooms - One Double (overlooking the Village Green) and One Twin - a Bathroom with hand-held mixer tap Shower attachment, Toilet, Basin with light/shaver socket above, Heated Towel-Rail, and ceiling Extractor Fan.
Immediately prior to our withdrawal from VisitEngland's 'National Accessible Scheme', Mallard was accredited as Access Level 'M3 - Assisted' as applicable to Wheelchair Users taking a holiday in self-catering accommodation, indicating its suitability for accompanied full-time Wheelchair Users. We have made no changes which would affect the level of 'access' offered since that accreditation was first awarded.

How to Find Us

It's easy. Typically, from south of here you'd take the A64 off the A1M, bypass the southern outskirts of the City of York, and the take the A169 from Malton to Pickering. If travelling here from the north, you'd probably travel via the A1M and Thirsk - taking the A170 to Pickering via Sutton Bank. You'll see that we've set out specific details below covering your last 5 miles of travel from Pickering, key collection, etc.

Malton Railway Station (with a regular service running between Scarborough and York Stations) is 25 minutes (14 miles) from Mel House Cottages. Leeds-Bradford Airport is 90 minutes (65 miles) away.

By Car from Pickering…

Please note that Sat Nav devices will no doubt handle your journey as far as Pickering perfectly satisfactorily - but see note below. We suggest that you should not necessarily rely upon them from that point onwards! Instead, just follow the following 'directions' which also include key collection details. Have a safe and trouble-free journey!

Directions from MALTON to Mel House Cottages, Newton-on-Rawcliffe, YO18 8QA

The route from Malton (about 20 miles north east of the City of York) to Pickering is straightforward. After taking the bypass around Malton, exit the A64 at the A169 for Pickering.

Directions from the centre of Pickering to Newton-on-Rawcliffe are as follows:-

Approximately ½ mile after entering the 30mph speed limit, turn left at the roundabout onto the A170 which links Thirsk to Scarborough.
After approximately 600 yards, turn right at the traffic lights. [You will follow the road you have turned into for roughly 5 miles to reach Newton-on-Rawcliffe.]
After 200 yards, a road enters from the left and another from the right. Keep straight ahead!
Pass the North York Moors Steam Railway Station on left, terraced housing on right.
Leave restricted 30mph speed limit and proceed to New Bridge Level Crossing (about ½ mile) under a canopy of trees, stream on left.
Road rises approx. 600 feet and then levels out, having a series of straight stretches with occasional bends.
On entering Newton-on-Rawcliffe (30mph speed restriction) you will find us approx. 600 yards on right - facing the Village Green and immediately before the Pub.
You will see the ‘Let's Holiday - Mel House Cottages' sign on the end of 'Mallard' Cottage. Before this Cottage is our concrete drive and before that our 3-storey house.
Go up the drive and ring the doorbell on the right - where the 6 foot wooden fence meets the back of our house - to let us know you've arrived, collect your keys, etc. [Please note that we do not hear a knock on our front door!]

Directions from THIRSK to Mel House Cottages, Newton-on-Rawcliffe, YO18 8QA

The route from Thirsk to Pickering is straightforward. Take the A170 to reach the set of traffic lights at the centre of Pickering.

Directions from the centre of Pickering to Newton-on-Rawcliffe are as follows:-

Turn left at the traffic lights. [You will follow the road you have turned into for roughly 5 miles to reach Newton-on-Rawcliffe.]
After 200 yards, a road enters from the left and another from the right. Keep straight ahead!
Pass the North York Moors Steam Railway Station on left, terraced housing on right.

[Note: With regard to Sat Nav 'directions', if travelling on the A170 from Helmsley to Pickering we recommend that you do not follow an instruction to turn left at Wrelton and then take a right up Cawthorne Lane unless you like living dangerously! Instead, just remain on the A170 heading for the centre of Pickering - at that point, switching to our 'directions' above - and then everything will turn out just fine!]
