Saltburn Valley Gardens Easy Access Walk
Walking Route, free entry
Details
Take a stroll in Saltburn Valley Gardens, where a maze of pleasant paths and tracks wind through a mixture of formal gardens and woodland. In days gone by, the thick, wild woods provided an ideal haven for smuggled goods arriving off the Saltburn coast, though the woods were tamed – and formal gardens planted – during the redevelopment of Saltburn as a resort in Victorian times. You can follow the downloadable 2-mile route, or simply strike off on your own and explore Saltburn’s wooded jewel, stopping at the tea room in the Valley Gardens and finishing with a walk on the seafront and an ice cream.

Saltburn by the Sea
Although there was long a fishing and farming hamlet at Saltburn, the Victorian upper town that developed during the 1860s arose from one man’s dream. While walking along the coast, wealthy industrialist Henry Pease had a vision of tall, splendid buildings rising from the clifftop. He established the Saltburn Improvement Company, bought the land and advertised for designs for the town. Plots were allocated for villas for wealthy visitors, hotels for the middle classes and areas for cheap boarding houses for the workers. There were reading rooms, a convalescent home, pier, cliff lift, Italianate gardens and woodland walks – but no pubs, because the Pease family were Quakers.
