Boxing Day Events

Boxing Day Events

The long-standing festive traditions of Scarborough will return to maintain inhabitants entertained throughout Christmas and New Year.

Events will begin on Boxing Day with the charity football game on South Bay between fishermen and firemen.

The teams will meet in town outside Heron Foods (opposite to the bank of Lloyds) on the day and march down to the seafront followed by the Comic Band. The Mayor's game will kick off at 10.30am and last until 12 pm.

While fishermen and firemen compete for the coveted trophy, the usual mile of pennies will be built by citizens. Coppers are lined up at the bottom of the kerb along Foreshore Road from the house of the lifeboat to Coney Island.

Festive operations will continue in the afternoon with the grand paddle off of the Scarborough Sub Aqua Club.

People are going to make their way to the harbor to watch the insane rafting at 12.30pm. Call 01723 372657 for those who wish to register.

All the cash raised during the day will be used at Christmas to buy food vouchers for the seniors.

Liz Blades, who has been organizing the football game for more than 20 years, said: "It began in 1893 when, during a storm, a fishing smack was lost at sea and five Scarborough boys lost.

“The football match was organised to raise money for the dependants of those people and it’s been going on ever since. People get involved because it’s such a good cause, it’s a fun day out and a chance to stretch your legs and walk off the turkey.”

Liz added: “The first game was held on Christmas Day at the Ebor Football Ground on top of Prospect Road. There were 1,500 spectators and the firemen won. On the day people raised 9 pounds, 11 shillings and 6 pence. Last year we raised £1,925.39.”

On New Year's Day, festive traditions will remain with the New Year's Day Dip from the Lions Club. Registration will take place at the Rowing Club from 10.30am to 12 pm before the case.

In Ayton, villagers will take part in the‘ East v West' Tug of War over the River Derwent. This will begin at 11 am and the Forge Valley Inn will be followed by a talent show.
