'Hairy Bob's Cave' is a whimsical folly residing at the foot of Scarborough Castle. It is a small piece of rock, which has been carved into what looks like a tiny house, for reasons, which have never officially been discovered.

Many different theories surround the legend that is Hairy Bob's Cave. One of the most popular being that the cave like carving was created by workmen during the construction of Marine Drive between 1897 and 1908.

Another local tale is that the cave was a storage place for a local workman's tools, who made doorsteps for the town's people from the surrounding excess stone.

The entrance to the 'cave' is built facing North West (towards the sea), which is a predominant wind direction, so it seems unlikely that it would have been used for shelter.

The name is also a mystery to us, and most people can only assume that it is the 'nickname' of the individual responsible for this particular curiosity.

One thing is for sure with Hairy Bob's Cave, it will always keep you guessing.
