Poppin' Our Clogs

Poppin' Our Clogs

Poppin' Our Clogs

A one-woman theatre show, written and performed by an award-winning Green Burial Ground owner, will be the first in a series of events for Scarborough’s newest festival, Poppin’ Our Clogs, when it plays for one night only at Woodend on 31st May 2018.

Outside the Box, billed as “A Live Show About Death”, has been performed to rave reviews nationally and at the Edinburgh Festival, including high praise from Olivier Award-winning, local playwright, Mike Kenny, who said the show moved him to “laughter and tears”, adding: “I loved this show! I can’t think of anything quite like it.”

Liz Rothschild, the show’s writer and performer, has, it must be admitted, a rather unique skill-set. She’s an actor who is also a funeral celebrant and the owner of a green burial ground in Oxfordshire voted best cemetery in 2015. For years Liz has been collecting stories from her work. She has combined those stories with her own experiences, to create a life-affirming, taboo-busting and often funny show that lifts the lid on mortality and invites its audience to address ‘the elephant in the room’.

The show is produced by and will be the inaugural event for the Poppin’ Our Clogs Festival, which takes place at Woodend on Saturday 30 June and Sunday 1 July 2018.

The festival is a volunteer led, not-for-profit community organisation comprising carers, relatives and friends concerned about the general low level of awareness about our rights and choices when it comes to the end of life. It aims to inform, entertain and celebrate by creating a safe space where people can share their experiences and give and receive support.

The Festival was the idea of Denise Gilfoyle, former Head of the Stephen Joseph Theatre’s Community Outreach Team, a woman with an enthusiasm for creating an open conversation around death and dying. She said:
“We couldn’t get a better show to kick off our festival than Outside The Box. It is beautifully performed by someone who has incredible insight, sensitivity and grace. This show is the opposite of gloomy. In fact, talking about death can be the most life-enhancing experience, and Liz does this expertly.”

The show starts at 7.30pm and the audience will be able to stay for an optional feedback and discussion after the show.
