Ride The BoS (Borough of Scarborough)

Ride The BoS 2017 is a challenge ride over 3 days, 12/13/14 May 2017, starting and finishing in Scarborough, North Yorkshire.

The challenge is not just in the miles covered but in the hills climbed within the Borough, which includes coast, moors, river valleys, the North York Moors National Park and parts of the Yorkshire Wolds. The distances are approximately 70/50/70 miles, taking in 16000 ft of climbing, with major climbs on each of the 3 days. The high point comes on day 2 at Young Ralph Cross, which is 418m or 1371ft. Although most of the riding is on small country roads, inevitably some small sections of major roads are included and each of the larger towns are visited, Scarborough, Whitby and Filey. The ride is led by qualified guides with 2 to each group. Each group also has a first aider. Accommodation is provided at Sneaton Castle, a 4 star hostel in Whitby providing all meals, single rooms (although doubles can be arranged via the hostel), a chance to discuss the day’s events in the bar during the evening and of course a safe place to leave your bike.

How it all began

Inspired by the Tour de France visit to Yorkshire in 2014, the then Mayor and Mayoress of the Borough, Andrew and Sue Backhouse, combined their ambition to visit every community in the Borough, during their Mayoral year with the opportunity to provide a legacy, showcasing the beauty of the area.

Working with a small team, led by Wayne Elliott of EDS Bikes, Snainton, they put together a road based 200 mile route, starting and finishing at Scarborough Rugby Club, that took in 94 villages, towns, and hamlets. The name of the ride plays on an abbreviation of the Borough of Scarborough - BoS.

The potential for a lasting legacy was formally recognised by the organisers of the Tour De France Grand Depart 2014 Legacy Initiative, which allows Ride The BoS to use the Cycle Yorkshire logo.
