Details

'Scarborough's churches past and present' is the latest exhibition at the Scarborough Maritime Heritage Centre in Eastborough. There used to be enough church space in Scarborough to house double the population of the town as everyone visiting on holiday went to church!
Our display covers over 50 of our town's churches past and present including C of E, Catholic, Methodist, Congregational, Unitarian, Primitive Methodist, United Reform, Baptist, Pentecostal, Quaker, Wesleyan and many others. As a fishing and shipbuilding town the men risked their lives at sea so a strong belief in a God helped families through the good and bad times.
Many of our churches are long gone or been converted into flats. Currently, only 5% of the UK's population go to church yet in times of crisis or great joy, weddings or funerals, we still seek support from them. Scarborough also had three monasteries including White, Grey and Black friars, Carmelite, Franciscan and Dominican. Fishing families paid tithes to them in the form of fish.

This exhibition is the fourth in a series of 'Scarborough town focus' displays we have put on, the previous ones being on Scarborough's old pubs, old hotels and the history of our fire brigade. This exhibition runs from October 1st to Christmas and is open from 11am to 4pm, Wednesday to Sunday. Entrance is free.
