The spirit of Christmas will take centre stage at Scarborough Open Air Theatre (OAT) in December when the newly created ‘Scarborough Sparkle’ event will see the venue transformed into a magical and enchanting Christmas wonderland.

After the best summer line-up Scarborough OAT has ever seen, including the widely celebrated performance by international pop icon, Britney Spears, Friday 17 August, plans are now being finalised for the venue to host a Christmas themed family shopping and entertainment weekend from 30 November to 2 December.

More than forty stalls selling quality Christmas gifts, artisan products and festive food and drink favourites, will be joined by an ice rink, illuminated rides, moonlight illuminated parade and yuletide choirs, making Scarborough Sparkle a special Christmas event for all the family to enjoy.

Yorkshire Coast Radio will bring its roadshow to the event and live music fans will be given the chance to get their hands on a pair of Kylie tickets, due to appear at Scarborough OAT Thursday 1st August 2019, and a pair of tickets for Cliff Richard on Wednesday 26 June, as well as tickets for some of the festive productions and attractions from around the Borough.

Cllr Martin Smith, Scarborough Borough Council Cabinet Member for Leisure said:
“The reputation of Scarborough OAT as a unique venue for A-list music stars has, without a doubt, been firmly cemented this year and we can’t wait to see what acts our promoters, Cuffe and Taylor, secure for 2019. In the meantime however, we’re keen to ensure the venue remains a much loved part of our community beyond the summer and we hope this special Christmas themed weekend will go some way to achieving that.”

**Weekend programme -
The weekend’s entertainment will start at 5.30pm on the Friday with a Moonlight and Song Parade from across the road in Peasholm Park to the heart of Scarborough Open Air Theatre’s wonderland experience. This will be followed by performances from Scarborough Community Choir at 6.15pm and Pauline Quirke Academy Singers at 6.45pm.

On Saturday 1 December at 3.00pm Staxton Singers, which are celebrating their 38th anniversary this year, will entertain the shoppers, and at 4.30pm it will be the turn of Twilight Productions Community Elf Choir with its child and adult members performing as festive elves. At 5.00pm children and adult singers from Hatton School of Performing Arts will perform, followed at 6.30pm by Dirty Windows, a six-piece ukulele band which plays rock, pop, jazz, blues and reggae. Between 5.30pm and 6.30pm on the Yorkshire Coast Radio stage, there will be solo performances from singer songwriters Luke Pilmer and Maisie Atkinson, both students at Scarborough TEC.
The Saturday entertainment programme will culminate at 7.00pm with a very special Carols by Candlelight rendition from the Churches Together in Scarborough group. Candles and carol sheets will be provided from 6.45pm for anyone that wants to join in with the group and mark the start of the Christmas season with joyful singing.

On Sunday 2 December there will be songs and entertainment throughout the day courtesy of Tony Peers Productions.

A free Scarborough Sparkle White Shoreline Suncruiser bus will be in operation on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 December to take people to the event. It will operate from Eastfield to Peasholm via various locations, including Falsgrave and Scarborough town centre. The timetable is available below or by contacting the Tourism Bureau on 01723 383636.

Dog policy -
You are welcome to bring your dog as it’s still an open park and not a closed event, HOWEVER please be aware that, depending on what time you visit, we anticipate very large crowds on the opening Friday evening and Saturday afternoon and evening. There will be music and announcements from Yorkshire Coast Road Show and it’s anticipated that there will be lots of family groups especially around the skating and children’s rides. It would be the responsibility of the owner to ensure that the dog is kept on a lead and under control at all times.
