Helmsley and Rievaulx Abbey Walk

The route from the market town of Helmsley to Rievaulx Abbey is a well-trodden one, but it never loses its capacity to delight and inspire.

Walk Route: The walk from Helmsley to Rievaulx forms the first part of the Cleveland Way National Trail and is well signposted and waymarked. There are two woodland paths en route, with steps in places.

Grosmont  to Whitby Walk

Join the River Esk on the final part of its journey from the high moors to the sea on this 8-mile linear walk that starts in Grosmont and finishes in style on the pier in Whitby (fish and chips optional!).

Walk Route: The route is mostly on fairly level bridleways, with several gates and some stiles along the way.

Thornton le Dale and Ellerburn Walk

Thornton le Dale is regarded by many people as the prettiest village in the National Park.

Walk Route: The paths on this level walk are waymarked, but run through riverside fields and may be muddy in places after rain. There are occasional stiles and gates en route.

Littlebeck and Hawsker

Explore the back roads, country lanes and woodland tracks between the valley hamlet of Littlebeck and the old railway line between Scarborough and Whitby, now known as the ‘Cinder Track’.

Cycle Route: A large part of the route is on country roads and well-made stone tracks, though there are some woodland sections where it might be muddy.

The Moors National Park Centre, Danby

A walk of contrasts – moorland, dales and village. The route can be tricky around Danby Head and across Danby Rigg. Save time? Ask the driver to drop you off 1 mile north of the Lion Inn at the road junction by Young Ralph Cross.

  • Access: Best to access using Moors Explorer bus.
