The Biscuit King of the North

The Biscuit King of the North

The year is 1857. The face of Britain is changing as it approaches the third decade of Victoria's reign. All over the country, new factories and mills are springing up, making everything from cotton to steel, textiles to food in ever-more efficient ways. More and more people are moving to the city to seek employment, rather than trying to eke a fragile living from the land. The railways are spreading over the land from coast to coast, linking the rapidly expanding urban areas. Entrepreneurs have become millionaires.

One of these is Jeremiah K Bootfeather, who owns Bootfeather Biscuits, the largest biscuit manufacturer in the country. His factory in Mellingham churns out thousands and thousands of sweet and savoury biscuits every week, satisfying the needs of the population's tea and coffee drinkers. His Cream Wafers are eaten in households up and down the country; his Oat Crumbles are staple fare in the Ritz and the Dorchester, and the seal of royal assent demonstrates the popularity of his Ginger Nuts at the Palace.

Jeremiah is renowned as a slightly eccentric philanthropist. He is generous to the poor, but not afraid to spend lavish amounts on his hobbies and interests. He is a keen ornithologist and fossil collector, and spends whatever little spare time he has to the coast to indulge himself in both hobbies.

Now though, Jeremiah is growing old. In his late sixties, his health has begun to fail him. He now walks with a stick, and his memory is not quite what it was. His enthusiasm for life, though, remains undiminished. He still goes to the factory six days a week, and can still often be found on the beach looking for his beloved fossils.

On 31st October, his body is found at the bottom of the steep cliffs which dominate the coastline. He lay on a rock, his body a contorted, twisted mass. He has been savagely beaten.

Who murdered Jeremiah K Bootfeather, and why? You have the chance to solve the mystery in 'The Biscuit Kind of the North'.
