The Haunting of the Vaults

The Haunting of the Vaults

Details

This October, Beach Hut Theatre Company invites you to enter Scarborough’s Market Vaults and witness a new ghost story full of thrills and scares.

‘The Haunting of the Vaults’ by Paul Spencer is a site specific immersive supernatural mystery that will take place in the historic Market Vaults. During the performance, the audience is encouraged to be a part of the story and watch as the spooky drama unfolds around them. Spiritualist medium Anna believes that an apparition resides in the Vaults - and she is determined to make contact. But in this game of fear, what other players are on the board?

Writer and Director Paul Spencer said, ‘the Market Vaults are a great location for such a dark mysterious story with their underground chambers and Old Town history. Think of the spirit world as a great house that is dark, blue and silent. It’s all around us, occupying the same space - but we cannot see it. Are you willing to unlock the door and peer inside?’

‘The Haunting of the Vaults’ is on October 24th, 25th, 26th and 27th at 7pm and 8.30pm. Tickets cost £8 and are available on the door or from the HOUSE of GAIA, Market Vaults Unit MS3, or from Deli Delicious, Scarborough Market Hall. On the evening of each performance, Deli Delicious’ Market Hall bar will be open and selling drinks from 6pm. Please note this is a promenade performance. Not recommended for under 14s or those with a nervous disposition.

Co-Artistic Director of Beach Hut, Alison Watt said, ‘as an artistically led, community driven theatre company, it is our goal to develop emerging writers and directors by giving them the opportunity to present their work to an audience. Paul has been part of Beach Hut for many years, and we are delighted that ‘The Haunting of the Vaults’ is our first producing project for a member of the company.’

Paul Spencer’s plays have been performed by companies such as Bananadrama and Beach Hut Theatre Company. He is a regular member of Beach Hut Theatre Company’s ‘Script Hut’ workshops. His supernatural play ‘The Lightkeeper’ formed part of their ‘Fantasy, Fables and Frights’ project in 2016, and was recently recorded as a podcast audio drama. As an actor he has appeared in the musical ‘Summer’s Edge’ and ‘The Tenants of Wuthering Eyre’ for Beach Hut Theatre Company and ‘Orpheus the Mariner’ for Animated Objects.

‘The Haunting of the Vaults’ has been produced by Alison Watt and John Pattison who are both Artistic Directors at Beach Hut Theatre Company. Alison has written for Soho Theatre, Stephen Joseph Theatre, Hull Truck and EastEnders; she is also an award-winning dramaturge, having won the 2016 Writers’ Guild of Great Britain Olwen Wymark Theatre Encouragement Award. John has written musicals with Alan Ayckbourn and John Godber, and worked as a Musical Director at The Royal National Theatre and The Royal Shakespeare Company. Their plays for Beach Hut Theatre Company include the successful fantasy musicals ‘Summer’s Edge’, ‘SnOwQuEeN’ and ‘The Tenants of Wuthering Eyre’.
