Wykeham is located 6 miles/10 kilometres south-west of Scarborough. The stone-built, estate village of Wykeham lies mainly to the south of the main road (A 170) from Pickering to Scarborough. An obvious curiosity is the clocktower gateway by the main road. It is the elaborately-altered tower of a former 14th century chapel that was pierced, spired and converted into a lych-gate leading to the new church. Wykeham Abbey, not open to the public, is a country mansion house, built on the site of Cistercian nunnery, and is the seat of Lord Downe. Disused gravel workings have been converted into a superb area of lakes which have been developed for fishing and watersports. Other facilities include a restaurant, public house, church, cafe/tea shop and public telephone.
