You can now cycle ‘coast to coast' from Walney Island in Cumbria to Whitby via Tan Hill (179 miles), thanks to the opening of Regional Route 52 between Barnard Castle and the historic North Yorkshire port.

Explore the back roads, country lanes and woodland tracks between the valley hamlet of Littlebeck and the old railway line between Scarborough and Whitby, now known as the ‘Cinder Track’.

Now a peaceful, rural dale in the heart of the National Park, in the nineteenth century Rosedale was part of industrial Yorkshire, with its ironstone mines, kilns and even a moorland railway.

Walk Route: The route follows minor roads and farm lanes for short periods, and passes through farmyards and farm outbuildings.

May Beck and Falling Foss Walk

Esk Valley East and Egton Bridge Cycle Route

For a taste of the best and most varied scenery in the Esk Valley, head out by bike on the eastern road circuit from The Moors National Park Centre at Danby.

Cycle Route: Heading east from The Moors National Park Centre at Danby, the circular road route runs down the daleside as far as Egton and Egton Bridge, before climbing up and across Egton High Moor and Glaisdale Moor. There are some longish ascents and descents.

  • Access: Easy to access.

Runswick Bay Easy Access Walk

Take a pleasant 2-mile linear walk along the Runswick Bay clifftop to enjoy wide views over Runswick Bay and Port Mulgrave.

Walk Route: The walk follows a mostly level grass/earth surface through fields along the cliff edge. There’s one kissing gate en route, and while there are some shallow steps at one point, an alternative path avoids the steps.
