Gearing up for Ghosts: off the beaten track in the North York Moors National Park

This is a legendary landscape, where centuries-old myths seem very much alive: beware witches and hobgoblins, evil giant worms and murderous wraiths; or discover lost treasure, and a peaceful haven in a sacred place blessed by saints.

Heed the warnings! Many of the legends in this area warn of the dangers of getting caught out by the weather. You can enjoy wonderful solitude in this spectacular part of the North York Moors National Park, but up on the moor-tops you can be exposed to some wild weather, so check the weather reports before you set out! This ride is often best done in autumn to see the stunning colours of the trees and flowers as they change for the season; or in spring with carpets of flowers in woodlands, the daffodils of Farndale being particularly admired.

Another option to get closer to the landscape and its stories, is to take a guide, especially if you’re not used to navigating the ‘wild’ countryside. There are a range of top-quality cycling and walking guides available, alongside a range of services and facilities like bike hire and servicing, in Ryedale’s Market Towns like Pickering and Malton, or at dedicated cycling centres in Fryup, Sutton Bank and Dalby Forest.
