Soulful Steps: a walk from the Ryedale Market Town of Helmsley to Rievaulx Abbey

This is a classic walk through the ages from the historic market town of Helmsley to Rievaulx Abbey. Today, the trail appears to be a peaceful wander through beautiful Ryedale countryside, but this area was once a teeming medieval world: the 900 year-old Helmsley Castle, known as the ‘cradle of English chivalry’, attracted knights and ladies to its tournament field and helped guard the border against the Scots; the town’s market has been teeming with traders and farmers for over 900 years; while the 800 year-old abbey, whose haunting ruins are famed for their peace and serenity, was once one of the most important monasteries in Europe, home to saints and the greatest spiritual writer of his age, his philosophies ground-breaking, and still revered.

On the walk, you’ll also pass the abbey’s farm - Griff Farm - which supported over 600 monks and lay brothers, and can now only be seen as faint ghost traces left in the earth; a spectacular 18th century landscaped garden, Rievaulx Terrace (National Trust), and the parkland of the Feversham family, who still live today in Duncombe Park as they have for centuries, along with a poltergeist in the attic. Parts of the Cleveland Way National Trail are very old, possibly with prehistoric roots, and bearing the footsteps of countless centuries of farmers, drovers, warriors, monks and pilgrims – truly a walk of lost souls.
