Details

This exciting exhibition has been sponsored by the Royal Society and explores the area’s importance in our understanding of the universe.

Captain Cook’s 1768 voyage, also sponsored by The Royal Society, mapped the transit of Venus. This enabled astronomers to calculate the distance between the earth and other planets for the first time.

The centrepiece of the exhibition is the ZEPLIN III dark matter detector. This stunning machine was used at Boulby Underground Laboratory until recently and has been donated to Whitby Museum by Imperial College, London. Boulby Underground Laboratory lies 1km under the earth’s surface and provides the ideal environment for research into dark matter away from outside radiation sources.

Find out how you can get involved in astronomy via Whitby Astronomical Society or the Dark Skies Festival. The North York Moors and Coast are a designated dark Skies discovery site and provide the ideal environment for stargazing away from population and light pollution.

Be inspired and find out more at Whitby Museum until 20th July.
