Ampleforth Abbey Church

Ampleforth Abbey Church

Details

Ampleforth Abbey has been home to a Community of Benedictine monks since 1802. The Abbey Church is the centre of monastic life and is open to visitors all year round.

When, in 1802, Father Anselm Bolton gave his home to a group of Benedictine monks, he could not have envisaged that this peaceful valley would become the home to the largest community of Benedictine monks in the UK.

At the heart of their life together, the monks seek God through prayer in the Abbey Church and the daily celebration of Mass. They are committed to serving the Church and the world through a variety of works, including the famous, independent Ampleforth College.

The sixth century Rule of St Benedict has provided the basis for the monastic virtues of humility, silence and obedience, as well as directives for daily living, which we at Ampleforth endeavour to uphold. In the spirit of St Benedict, who said no monastery is complete without guests, Ampleforth Abbey extends a warm welcome to all our visitors.

Guided tours of the Abbey Church are available every Thursday at 2:15pm or by appointment. On certain dates pre-booked tours of the Apple Orchard and Cider Mill are also available and these tours include a delicious lunch and produce sampling.
