Details

Explore one of Britain’s most magnificent houses; from awe-inspiring architecture and grand interiors to sweeping parkland dotted with lakes, temples and formal gardens.

Built over 300 years ago by Sir John Vanbrugh for the 3rd Earl of Carlisle, today Castle Howard remains home to the Howard family. Discover our rich and varied history from royal visits, film stars and Pre-Raphaelite artists to architectural firsts, great fires and the challenges of preserving the house and estate for the future.

Free flowing tours of the house allow groups to explore at their leisure, with friendly and knowledgeable guides throughout happy to share stories.

Spend a day exploring our beautiful gardens; with meandering woodland paths, lakeside terraces and sweeping vistas. Our walled garden is the perfect place to relax with a stunning collection of roses, herbaceous borders and a formal potager. Seasonal highlights including daffodils, rhododendrons, bluebells and roses. Daily outdoor tours, from March to October, offer further opportunity to explore.

Popular seasonal events include the flower festival from 23 to 26 June 2016 and Christmas opening from 19 November to 23 December 2016

Enjoy a choice of six shops including garden centre and farm shop, plus three cafes. A wide choice of private tours, talks, lectures and refreshments are also available exclusively for groups. For more information or to book please call Group Reservations 01653 648621.

Castle Howard is located 15 miles north east of York, just off the A64 and is easily accessible via coach (drivers should be aware or narrow gateways on certain routes).
