Kunsthuis is a contemporary art gallery located 15 miles north of York in the beautiful scenic village of Crayke. Since May 2014, the gallery has continued to celebrate the best of Dutch art alongside the increasingly well regarded and emerging artists of the UK. Throughout our inspiring and exciting exhibition programme we continue to build an excellent reputation with customers and collectors from the UK and beyond.

Self-proclaimed as a 'unique addition to the Yorkshire art scene’, Kunsthuis art gallery resides within a converted barn in the beautiful setting of 'Dutch house'. Housed within it's original wooden beams, the beautifully bright and airy space boasts an impressive featured plum tree, central to the building. Nature plays a big part in this art establishment which grants a very special atmosphere and an abundance of inspiration for our exhibiting artists and creatives alike. The additional workshop space is occupied by residential artist (owner of Dutch house) Cecile Creemers and is a place where a selection of artists have taken residence offering sought-after Master Classes.

A small but established venue for showcasing and selling contemporary art in the region, Kunsthuis is the go-to place for artistic incitement and escapism. The gallery features a rich range of work by prolific British and Dutch professionals, and we pride ourselves on bringing a varied and desirable selection of work to Yorkshire offering something a little different in our contemporary tastes. With a vibrant eclectic programme of exhibitions representing a range of paintings, sculptures, prints, photography, ceramics and jewellery, there’s certainly something for every art lovers palate.

Our exhibition programme refreshes every eight weeks in order to boast new and innovative artists who have caught our eye. As our gallery evolves we continue to inspire our audience with relevant and contemporary collections of works. Individuality, craftsmanship and practitioners who are pushing the boundaries of creativeness are foremost among the qualities we appreciate. Kunsthuis represents unique and captivating works which demonstrate a strong interest in contemporary arts discourse and are engaging for our viewers. Throughout the year you can expect contemporary front of house exhibitions, a range of print and photography works as well as zestful displays committed to showcasing ceramics, sculptures and jewellery. The seasonal requirements of those looking to buy are also of utmost importance to Kunsthuis meaning you’ll find dedicated exhibitions from season to season. All in all Kunsthuis is an engaging experience filled with creative zeal.

The Dutch house sits within a beautiful ecological and sustainable garden focussed on attracting wildlife. The oasis contains a collection of native trees, herbaceous borders, a wild flower meadow and a display of sculptures. The gardens themselves are developed and designed by owner of Dutch house Sjaak Kastelijn, who is former manager of York Museum Gardens.

Set on a 1.6 acre plot with lovely views to the surrounding fields and the hilltop village of Crayke, the gardens also feature the river Foss which meanders through the site. Due to the gardens natural setting in a rural area and being so close to the river, it is a haven for wildlife and a feeding station for bees, insects and birds. The Dutch house provides cohesion between art and nature, and an educational opportunity for visitors to learn more about sustainable gardening and gardening to increase wildlife and biodiversity.

The featured wildlife meadow area is seeded with native wildflower and creates a splash of colour throughout the summer. Vegetables and scented flowers are grown in raised beds which allow visitors to enjoy them to the full. We aim to grow a good mixture of old and new vegetables which are fully utilised in our cafe alongside herbs from our herb border, some of which are Mediterranean in origin but all add to the culinary experience. In our relaxing, child friendly art café you can sit down, unwind and enjoy a healthy homemade meal. We serve a fine selection of teas, coffees, homemade cakes, breakfasts, light lunches, homemade soups and Dutch specialities such as our famous sweet and savoury Pancakes and Poffertjes. If you fancy something different then this is the place to be, serving food with continental flavours, but also a touch of traditional English baking and cooking. In the arts & crafts shop inside our cafe you can browse and buy unique art and gifts from local artists.

Dutch house offers a level access site with on site parking and easy access to the art cafe, gardens and toilet facilities. The gallery can be accessed via a movable ramp.
