In honour of World Theatre Day we thought it was only right to shine a spotlight on the amazing theatres we have here on the Yorkshire coast. Without being ‘dramatic’ we think that we have some of the best theatres around and are a must-see during your visit, so let’s raise the curtain and see what the Yorkshire coast has to offer…

Stephen Joseph Theatre

What once was an Odeon cinema is the beautifully restored 1930s building that is now Stephen Joseph Theatre; home to the famous-theatre-in-the-round which was the first of its kind not only in the UK but in the world. Here you can now enjoy a variety of theatrical performances as well as cinema screenings all year round.

The theatre is also well-known for its connection to famous playwright Sir Alan Ayckbourn who was artistic director of the Stephen Joseph Theatre for 37 years! He has written and produced 89 full-length plays in Scarborough and London and is an icon in the industry.

If nothing else the Stephen Joseph Theatre is a must-see for that perfect Instagram shot – I mean just look at that picture, with its cool retro vibes you’ll feel like you’ve gone back in time!

You can also grab a bite to eat and drink within the theatre at Eat Me Café & Social located on the first floor of the building.

Whitby Pavillion

Situated on the West Cliff of Whitby you’ll find the iconic Whitby Pavilion Theatre. The Victorian building which was built in 1878 has the most incredible views overlooking the North Sea. Again another beautiful building for a great picture so make sure you have your camera at the ready!

The theatre is home to a mix of entertainment including: plays, traditional drama, pantomimes, musicals and comedy. The variety of shows ensures that audiences of all ages will find something they enjoy. The venue itself is popular with touring companies and performers who enjoy visiting here.

Fancy something to eat? Not a problem, the pavilion café within the glass atrium is a great option for a bite to eat with stunning panoramic sea views from Sandsend Nab to Whitby’s east and west piers.

The theatre also hosts its own in-house production company (YMCA Productions) who present many productions at Easter and throughout summer. Not forgetting a very popular pantomime each year at Christmas!
