About
Cober Hill Hotel is a beautiful Victorian mansion set in 11 acres of stunning grounds, nestled in the North York Moors National Park and adjacent to the Heritage Coast.
Cober Hill was bought in 1920 by Arnold Rowntree, MP for York, and nephew of Joseph Rowntree, of chocolate and philanthropic fame.
In May 1920, Arnold wrote his letter of wishes setting out his vision for the future of Cober Hill. We remain true to that vision today:
I want it to be a place of joy and beauty…..a centre for refreshment and inspiration.
In 2017, Cober Hill became an independent charity, having previously been part of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. Cober Hill Ltd is a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Cober Hill Charitable Trust (registered charity number 1167215, company number 09666472). All profits made are used to further our work of bringing people together and ensuring that Cober Hill is maintained and preserved for future generations to enjoy.
All our rooms are en-suite and provide simple, homely comforts. We also have a conference hall, theatre and four beautiful lounges overlooking the gardens, croquet lawn and tennis courts. The meadows, Jubilee Garden and Secret Garden provide both inspiration and tranquillity, and the children's play area and clock golf offer plenty of fun activities for families.
Our idyllic location between Scarborough and Whitby makes us the ideal location for an outdoor-themed holiday, whether your interest is walking, running, cycling, birdwatching, riding, fossil-hunting or simply spending time outdoors enjoying the landscape of the North York Moors National Park and the Yorkshire Coast.
Not managed to see each other for too long? Celebrating a special birthday or anniversary? If you’d like to get together with your family, we are the ideal venue for a weekend or longer break. Spend time together relaxing in our beautiful gardens with play areas for the children, share our delicious home-cooked and locally-sourced food, walk down to the sea, or join the Cleveland Way for a more challenging walk.
Had a hard week? Deserve an affordable treat right now? Just want a couple of nights away from it all to rest and recuperate? We are happy to offer short breaks, including one-night breaks and they are often available at short notice. So, if it’s Thursday and you can’t wait for the weekend, give us a call on 01723 870310 and let’s brighten up your day with an unplanned treat very soon!
Cober Hill is the perfect setting to learn a new skill or develop an existing one with one of our arts-themed breaks. We host a variety of creative courses throughout the year, both midweek and at weekends. Our stunning but peaceful location and beautiful gardens are bound to inspire your creative spirit. Our creative holidays are available on either a fully residential, or non-residential basis.
Always wanted to try something new? Now is your chance! Our holidays include lace making, jewellery making, watercolour painting, stained glass making, painting, card making and photography.
When your business needs time away from the daily routine, Cober Hill offers a variety of flexible options which can be tailored to meet your requirements, whether it is for an away-day to stop, think and exchange ideas with your team, a training day, study day or team-building event. We can also arrange product launches, client hospitality, facilities for interviews and mediation sessions. Whatever your business needs, we have the flexibility to meet them.
We are dog friendly so bring the whole family!
We look forward to welcoming you to Cober Hill and we are here to make your stay a relaxing and memorable one.
