Image of the Fox and Hounds Inn

Dated back to 1555, The Fox & Hounds at Ainthorpe is a traditional country inn set in the heart of the North York Moors.

Offering 9 comfortable en-suite bedrooms, a popular bar and restaurant with spacious outdoor seating, as well as doorstep access to local footpaths, bridleways and cycle routes, The Fox & Hounds is the ideal destination for your visit to one of the UK’s most stunning National Parks.

Located less than 1 mile away from the North York Moors Visitor Centre and 2 miles from the Yorkshire Cycle Hub, our historic inn is conveniently situated for visitors wishing to explore on two feet, two wheels or four hooves.

The pretty fishing villages of Yorkshire’s heritage coast are less than 20 minutes by car and a railway station in adjoining Danby offers visitors easy access to the moorland villages along the Esk Valley and busy seaside town of Whitby.

The historic City of York, with its celebrated Minster and famous shopping street ‘The Shambles’ is easily accessible by car and Castle Howard, one of Britain’s finest stately homes, is just a short drive away.

A former coaching inn, our bedrooms offer picturesque views across the North York Moors National Park. All rooms are en-suite with 32” Freeview televisions and provide complimentary tea and coffee. Our traditional Swedish sauna is the perfect way to relax after a long day walking, cycling or riding, or if you would prefer something more energetic, guests have free access to local tennis courts.

The Fox & Hounds has been accredited Dark Skies Friendly, and we supply red torches, binoculars and sky maps for any guests wishing to take advantage of our fantastic night skies during their stay.

Onsite drying facilities and secure cycle store make us a welcome stopover for travellers tackling long distance routes such as Wainwright’s Coast-to-Coast or the Cleveland Way National Trail. We can provide a pick-up and drop-off service for smaller groups, as well as an early breakfast option and pack-up lunch for your onward journey.

Our licensed bar offers a range of traditional cask conditioned beers, continental lagers and quality wines, and at The Fox & Hounds we are proud to serve locally sourced meat, vegetables and seafood. Our menu is a selection of tasty, home-cooked dishes prepared freshly on site by our Head Chef, Rachel and her team. Specific dietary requirements catered for, please enquire for more details.

Food is served daily from 12:00-14:00 and 18:00-21:00 (17:00-20:00 on Sundays).
We are dog friendly.
