About

Our One day coastal foraging Robin Hood’s Bay course is a great way to learn about the diversity of edible seaweed and shellfish on our rocky coasts.

We start off the day exploring the foreshore, looking at the seaweeds that we can harvest for food and at the different species of crabs and shellfish in the rock pools and gullies. Foraging on this beautiful piece of coastline is always an adventure, there can be all sorts of crabs and seaweeds, winkles and even baby lobsters. We will explain the identification and cooking of the different wild foods and the local conservation policy.

After a morning on the beach and rocks we return to the village with our foraged food. Lunch is in ‘Tea, Toast and Post’ a lovely café just metres from the slipway. We have a delicious two course lunch made using local and foraged ingredients, then in the afternoon we look at some of the edible plants that grow along the leafy pathways around Robin Hood’s Bay. This is an interesting little walk comprising woodland, grassland and streamside habitats.

Learn about edible seaweeds and shellfish, where to find them and how to cook them. Chris will demonstrate some shellfish preparation and you will receive reference sheets to compliment the course.

We are strong advocates of responsible and sustainable foraging and we will show you how to collect your wild edibles in a way that will have little impact on the landscape.

The minimum age for this coastal foraging course is 8 years, under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. The course fees do not include car parking charges. Please dress for the weather, wellies and waterproofs are usually best!
