About

Several long-distance cycle routes pass through the National Park, giving access to some of the UK's most stunning landscapes. The routes are part of Sustrans' National Cycle Network, and are well signposted.

National Route 1

Route 1 clocks in at 1,695 miles, and runs from Colchester to the Shetland Islands, via the east coast of England and Scotland. Our section runs from Scarborough to Whitby along a 21-mile line of the former railway, known as the Cinder Track. It's a great ride, running via the beach and boulders of Hayburn Wyke, the panoramic headland at Ravenscar, Boggle Hole and its eco-hostel, the old smugglers' haunt of Robin Hood's Bay and Whitby itself.

National Route 65

National Route 65 (131 miles) runs from Hornsea to Middlesbrough, via Hull, Selby, York and Easingwold, taking in the dramatic western scarp of the North York Moors National Park, including historic sites at Byland Abbey and Mount Grace Priory. A choice of routes between Coxwold and Osmotherley offers a circular tour of the Hambleton Hills.

National Route 165

Route 165 (74 miles) runs from Barnard Castle to Whitby, running through the Tees Valley, onto Kildale Moor and into the National Park, via Great Ayton and the picturesque Esk Valley. The route links with stations on the Esk Valley railway line, and is also part of the Walney to Whitby (W2W) coast-to-coast challenge route.

National Route 168

National Route 168 links Guisborough with the Walney to Whitby (W2W) route east of Kildale, via a high moorland and partly rough track section.
