Whitby Literature Festival

About

The beautiful picturesque town of Whitby has always been a hub of inspiration for writers and poets, and has inspired many literary classics, from Dracula to modern day tales. The famous Whitby Abbey was also home to Caedmon, the earliest English poet, whose poetry is the oldest surviving English text in existence.

In its inaugural year, the Festival’s theme Inspired By Whitby aims to motivate and spark creativity in all who attend. Whether a writer, an author, a poet, or a prolific reader the Festival has something to inspire everyone.

The Festival will open on the Friday with the Children's Stories By The Sea Short Story Competition, and will run until the Sunday , with the launch of the Hetty & Betty Writer's Award for adults; with guest authors, activities and more.

Events will take place across the town, in the quirky and hidden venues Whitby has to offer. Family activities will be available in a number of family friendly venues across the town – just follow the Stories By The Sea trail.

Guest author events will take place in quirky and unusual venues throughout the town, details of which can be found on the venues page, and in the Whitby Literature Festival programme.

There will be supporting events leading up to, and at the Festival. Please visit webiste for details of these.

The Whitby Literature Festival is supported by businesses, individuals and organisations across Whitby, and by Scarborough Council.
