Esk Valley East and Egton Bridge Cycle Route

For a taste of the best and most varied scenery in the Esk Valley, head out by bike on the eastern road circuit from The Moors National Park Centre at Danby.

Cycle Route: Heading east from The Moors National Park Centre at Danby, the circular road route runs down the daleside as far as Egton and Egton Bridge, before climbing up and across Egton High Moor and Glaisdale Moor. There are some longish ascents and descents.

Grosmont  to Whitby Walk

Join the River Esk on the final part of its journey from the high moors to the sea on this 8-mile linear walk that starts in Grosmont and finishes in style on the pier in Whitby (fish and chips optional!).

Walk Route: The route is mostly on fairly level bridleways, with several gates and some stiles along the way.

Cloughton and Hayburn Wyke Walk

Castleton to Lealholm Walk

The moorland villages of Castleton and Danby set the scene on this 7½-mile linear walk that wends its way from the higher moors down to the gentler reaches of the Esk Valley around Lealholm.

Walk Route: The first half of the route follows woodland and field paths, with gates and one wall-stile en route and two short sections on minor roads.

Roseberry Topping and Cook's Monument Walk

An ascent of the ‘Yorkshire Matterhorn’, plus a reminder or two of the great navigator and explorer Captain Cook – just some of the delights of this classic 7-mile circular walk through dappled woodlands and across heather moorland.

Walk Route: The climb up Roseberry Topping (1,050 feet/320 metres) is a steep ascent up a stepped path and stone track – there's also another (gentler) ascent from Gribdale Gate to Cook's Monument.

Levisham Moor and Hole of Horcum Walk

Be prepared for grand landscapes and big views on this North York Moors classic.

Walk Route: The broad track across Levisham Moor is easy to follow, but it can be muddy in places. Be prepared for poor visibility in bad weather. The ravine of Dundale Griff can be dangerous, with slippery surfaces and falling rocks – keep to the path at all times.
