Get a real feel for two very different landscapes in the National Park on a roller-coaster of a route that starts high on the moors at Saltergate.

Cycle Route: The route mostly follows good stone tracks and tarmac, with a sweeping grass/stone moorland section to finish. You should be prepared to walk up the short, steep roads to Lockton and Levisham, but otherwise it’s a ride for beginners, families and explorer

Nearly 2,000 years ago the Romans built a group of fortifications overlooking the central moorlands of the National Park.

Walk Route: The trail starts in the far corner of the car park, next to the information panel and the disabled parking bay. It's a 1-mile loop – simply follow the marker posts showing a carved head of a Roman soldier.

Skirt the encroaching moors on a short road ride that takes you across the ancient lands of Spaunton Manor, encompassing the villages of Hutton le Hole, Lastingham, Spaunton and Appleton le Moors.

The ‘lost dale’ of Bransdale – north of Kirkbymoorside and Helmsley – is a gem, smaller and more remote than the dales on either side, only accessible on a single road that loops around the flanking moors via the dalehead at Cockayne.

Cycle Route: Bransdale is a joy to cycle, offering a mix of moorland road riding and fabulous broad valley views. Ride the route anticlockwise from Kirkbymoorside for the best experience.
