Scarborough Seafest Maritime Festival 20th to 22nd July

Ahoy there shipmates! And all aboard for the Scarborough Seafest Maritime Festival.

Come and join us and celebrate the Yorkshire Coast's amazing Maritime Heritage, in this our 20th year, on West Pier, South Bay Scarborough. This popular event is one of the key events that take place during the summer along the coast and is attended by over 20,000 people across the weekend.

The Seafest Food Theatre Sponsored by Scarborough Hospitality Association

A mouth-watering line up of top regional chefs will be cooking up a fishy feast for visitors to this year’s Seafest. The Food Theatre will be hosting two days of FREE cookery demonstrations with the chance to sample the mouth-watering recipes after each demonstration. No booking is required but we advise to get there early to take your seat.

Chef Profiles

Christian Taylor – Christian is a Chef turned Mobile Caterer ! Recently seen In and around the Yorkshire coast in his own American style food truck, aptly named The Taylor Made Kitchen, serving culinary delights ranging from Buffalo burgers, Vietnamese chicken curry right down to homemade ice cream. You are sure to find some great tasting food served up by this Scarborough Chef.
Christian Taylor
Martyn Hyde - Martyn grew up in Sheffield, but has always had close connections to the Yorkshire coast. For many years, he ran a successful restaurant in Thailand, The Drunken Monkey. His time there and his travels around the Far East and the States, plus partner Stephen Dinardo’s Shetland heritage, have all been major influences on the style of food at Eat Me Café which the couple run in Scarborough. Eat Me Café has won many awards, most recently Local Gem 2018 in The Good Food Guide and Best Place to Eat in the 2017 Toast of the Coast Awards.
Martin Hyde
Rob Clark - Rob was born in Scarborough, attended Yorkshire Coast College and was trained by Chef Lecturer Ken Allison. Rob went on to work at The Star Inn, Harome to work alongside Andrew Pern on the main course section, and The Box Tree, Ilkley. Both awarded Michelin Stars and a host of other accolades and awards. Rob went on to join Yorkshire Coast College as a Chef Lecturer for 7 years, to training the Hospitality chefs of the future, to then finally establish Clarks Restaurant in Scarborough 2016.
Captain Mal Nicholson – Owner and Captain of HMS Pickle - Tall Ships Captain Mal Nicholson is a 4th generation engineer, who bought HMS Pickle in 2014. It was a recreation of the vessel that brought the news of the Battle of Trafalgar. HMS Pickle was previously a spy ship for Lord Nelson, and was rescued in Gibraltar as a wreck. Mal took her to Portugal and rebuilt her over a two year period, then sailed from Portugal to Portsmouth, and then onto its home berth in Hull.

Harrison Barraclough – Executive Chef, Plum & Partridge, Husthwaite

Yorkshire born and bred Harrison is a passionate and award-winning chef based at the Plum and Partridge in Husthwaite. Harrison was one of the youngest chefs in the UK to win an AA rosette at the ripe old age of 19 and has continued to collect accolades for almost a decade since. He strongly believes that no matter where you are, you should exploit the seasonal produce on your doorstep and work closely with local suppliers.

Steph Moon - Stephanie Moon is having an exciting year in 2018 she is Chef Consultant to Rudding Park and gets to cook with some of the finest produce from their extensive kitchen gardens. Steph was crowned 'Yorkshire Food Hero' at the Deliciouslyorkshire Taste Awards 2017. Steph has travelled the world with her job, also been on BBC 2 Great British Menu and BBC1 Chefs Put Your Menu Where Your Mouth Is.
Stephanie Moon
Luke Daniels - Luke is a self taught chef, and has recently been promoted to head chef at the Weston hotel, Scarborough, where their focus is on locality and seasonality. He has worked at several well-known places around Scarborough, such as Ox Pasture Hall and The Green Room.

  • Royal Navy Fast Patrol Boats HMS Example and HMS Explorer - Fast Inshore Patrol Boats provide training and maritime experience for University Royal Naval Unit students and THEY also provide support to wider fleet tasking and exercises around the UK and Europe waters. Open Saturday 10am -3pm & Sunday 10am – 4pm
  • HMS Pickle – HMS Pickle is a recreation of the messenger ship that brought back news of Admiral Lord Nelson’s death at the Battle of Trafalgar. Open for the public to explore with nautical demonstrations and activities for all the family on-board. Open 10am until 5pm Saturday & Sunday
  • Wet Wheels - Wetwheels is a 9 metre catamaran specially built to build disabled people’s confidence by providing the opportunity to access the sea in a fun, safe, stimulating and rewarding way using a specially modified, fully accessible powerboat. With the support of donors and partner organisations they provide water-based activity experiences for disabled people on board specially designed boats.

Free Shellfish Tours

Free Shellfish Tours - Go on a seafood safari and get hooked for life on shellfish !

A rare insight, usually hidden behind closed doors a chance to get up close and personal with shellfish production; the feast from the East. Join local fishermen to learn more about lobsters, crabs and the many shellfish that are caught locally and their journey from sea to plate.

Tours are free and take place at two venues;

Tours take place from 1.30pm until 3.30pm every 15 minutes, tours limited to 6 people at a time. Please ensure you are wearing suitable flat footwear and all children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Lighthouse Tours

Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd July

Scarborough’s iconic lighthouse stands imposingly on the end of Vincent Pier. Watching over the coming and goings of the busy fishing harbour, with its colourful collection of boats; it has been a guiding light to sea farers for over two centuries. The building was destroyed by a shell from a German warship during WWI and then rebuilt and transformed to its former glory. Book a tour and take in the 360 views from the upper balcony.

Tours cost £2.50 per person and run from 9.30am until 4pm – All tours must be pre – booked, please call the Tourism bureau on 01723 383636. Tours conducted by and courtesy of Scarborough Yacht Club

The Great Yorkshire Brewery Beer Festival

Enjoy the festival atmosphere both inside the huge beer and music marquee and outside on West Pier; The Great Yorkshire Brewery had been producing award winning ales for over 25 years. An exclusive beer to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Seafest this year will be the ‘Endeavour’, a world record breaking beer made from 2018 different hops ! Expect to see well over 35 locally sourced real ales, including old favourites and brand new beers from micro-breweries around the region.

Seaside Walk Week Comes to Scarborough

Seaside Walk Week

Get set for a whole afternoon of discovery and adventure on a Seaside Walk Tour. Go fossil hunting and discover 180 million year old dinosaur footprints and explore rock pools with all sorts of creatures that live along the foreshore. Then enjoy some creative colouring before you dive into an underwater adventure with your exclusive out-of-hours pass at Scarborough Sealife Sanctury.

- Walks held on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 July
- Walks start at 2.00pm in the South Bay - next to the Police Box outside the Ask restaurant YO11 1PE
- £10 per adult, £2.50 a child (5-16yrs)
- Price includes a guided walk from Hidden Horizons – with ‘Seashore Exploration’ – and exclusive out-of-hours access to the Sealife Sanctuary from 5 - 6.30pm

Scarborough Maritime Heritage Exhibition

Come and learn more about the history of Scarborough, ship building, fishing and the maritime life of the port and Harbour going back to the Romans and Vikings. View maritime displays, watch net mending and take a look round numerous mini replica boats. The Scarborough Maritime Heritage Centre has been working for over 10 years to help preserve the maritime legacy of Scarborough so that it can be passed to future generations.

Lost Children

We want everyone to have a great time over the weekend, but sometimes children can become separated from adults. Below are a few simple rules and pieces of information to avoid getting separated and what to do it it happens:

  • You may wish to write your mobile number on a piece of paper for your child to keep in their pocket. This may help with quick contact should you become separated.
  • At most events, most instances of children becoming separated from their parents happens during a display, as people get distracted, please ensure your children are with you at all times. 
  • If a lost child has not been claimed by a parent, relative or carer within 20 minutes of being found by a staff member, the police will be called.

Event Safety

There will be a first aid point located on West Pier. If you or someone you are with suffers an injury or is feeling unwell, please notify an event steward immediately, who will arrange for medical assistance.

Please check expected weather conditions before travelling, bringing appropriate suncream and fluids with you if warm temperatures are expected. There will be many outlets along the seafront area also selling drinks to keep you hydrated throughout the day.

Listen for safety announcements from the PA system located along the main seafront area, and follow the safety advice given by events stewards or security.

Please do not bring glass bottles or glasses to the event and please help keep our beautiful seafront tidy by using the bins provided.
