Arts & Heritage

Whitby has an abundance of heritage sites, prime amongst which is the superb Benedictine Whitby Abbey, now run by English Heritage. The Abbey has a recently refurbished visitor centre, with plenty to keep the keenest history buff busy.

The town still has a thriving Literary and Philosphical Society, founded in 1823, which runs the fascinating Whitby Museum and is home to many collections including one about the whaling industry, of which Whitby was a world leader in the 18th and 19th centuries. Nearby is the Pannett Art Gallery, with regularly changing exhibitions.

Elsewhere, the town is crammed with fascinating buildings, and shops selling jet jewellery and fossils – did you know that ammonites are, according to legend, snakes turned to stone by St Hilda of Whitby?
