Known for its spectacular scenery and centuries of history the North York Moors also offers accessible coast and moors. Visit ruined abbeys, take a historic train journey and explore magnificent gardens.

Explore by car, on foot, hire an adapted bike or a tramper, and immerse yourself in the diverse landscapes, from sweeping moorland, to deep forest and high coastal cliffs – it’s all possible.

Explore the North York Moors with this accessible itinerary
 

Step back in time with a heritage train journey on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, enjoy stunning views from the comfort of an accessible carriage. Explore the extensive ruins of Whitby Abbey and fascinating exhibition which tells the tale of 3,000 years of history and how the town inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

Discover historic rural life at the Ryedale Folk Museum and explore over 20 buildings demonstrating life from the Iron Age to the 1950s, set on a gently sloping six-acre site. Head to Sutton Bank National Park Centre to take in the big-skies and open panoramas on a choice of accessible trails and hire a tramper to see the Kilburn White Horse and ‘England’s finest view’. For a full sensory experience, visit Helmsley Walled Garden and wander through five acres of traditional walled gardens on step free paths.

Immerse yourself in Dalby Forest, with 8,000 acres of woodland, extensive trails, land art and a visitor centre, there is more than enough to do to spend a day here. Hire a cycle from Dalby Forest Cycle Hub’s range of adapted and assisted bikes and explore the forest’s easy trails. Inn on the Moor Hotel is the friendliest of hotels nestled in the scenic village of Goathland. The hotel has level access to reception areas and a beautiful accessible bedroom.

Summerfield Farm has three highly specified accessible cottages, plus an accessible holiday home with views of Whitby Abbey, and an all-round focus on accessibility.

Wellspring Farm’s beautiful Vale Cottage, with two downstairs bedrooms, one with luxury wet room, is set in extensive gardens and farmland close to Dalby Forest.

Sunday Cottage is a 4-star gold rated property in the converted methodist school in Grosmont, offering a highly specified wheelchair accessible cottage.
